Palazzo de La Salle and its connections with the Knights of St John : discoveries and new insights

Abstract

Recent studies, while complementing earlier ones on Valletta's palatial houses, have enriched our knowledge on the piecemeal origins and chequered history of Palazzo de La Salle, a late-sixteenth century building situated at the lower end of what is today Republic Street in Valletta.' Prior to such publications our knowledge of this baroque jewel, which is just a few hundred metres away from the Grandmaster's Palace, was based on scanty information which left great lacunae in the history of the Palazzo.
