Abstract: Biographical material on women in Malta in the seventeenth century is scarce, and their life stories are remote. This paper explores a rare biography of a Maltese woman at that period, Geltruda Cumbo (1613–56). It describes an instance of religious fervour in early modern Malta, in the context of the Catholic Reformation. Taking both literary and historical approaches, this hagiographical narrative about Suor Geltruda Cumbo is explored in relation to social structures. Gender issues are highlighted, from cultural and religious perspectives. A network of women attempted to promote the cult of their relative Geltruda as a holy woman. They were inspired by Teresa of Avila, whose life story they read in Teresa’s own writings. Within the religious ideals of femininity of their time, these women attempted to shape their own way of life and identity.
