Abstract: When writing her novel, Romola, George Eliot went to great lengths in order to create a distinctive Florentine air to the book. Her reading and research were extensive and she immersed herself deeply in Florentine history and culture. In her letters, Eliot tells of the "unspeakable pains in preparing to write Romola - neglecting nothing I could find that would help me to what I may call the 'Idiom' of Florence in the largest sense one could stretch the word to.
