Abstract: Educated to the formative value of the Grand Tour and aware of the declining intellectual prestige that travelling had acquired in Edwardian England, in 1901 Forster prepared for a tour of Italy with his mother. Planned in every detail, the journey was 'something considerably more middle-class and Edwardian than a Grand Tour';' churches, monuments, and places were visited after a careful reading of Baedeker's travel guide, whose descriptions and scrupulous recommendations had become a symbol of tourism at the end of the nineteenth century.
