Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated infection control measures have significantly impacted residents of long-term care facilities, particularly those with dementia. The infection prevention protocols have posed unique challenges for this vulnerable population. The burden of managing the pandemic has also taken its toll on allied health professionals working in these facilities, who play a critical role in enhancing the quality of dementia care. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of allied health professionals (occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and speech language pathologists) working at a long-term care facility, of the quality of dementia care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also aimed to explore the implications of findings on the quality of dementia care. Method: The study adopted a qualitative methodology that used semi-structured interviews featuring open-ended questions. A purposive sampling technique was utilised to recruit six participants, comprising two individuals from each department (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology). Participants were selected through intermediaries from the three professions involved. Findings: After conducting a thematic analysis of the data, four prominent themes emerged, outlining the factors influencing the quality of dementia care. These encompass challenges associated with dementia care amidst the pandemic, difficulties in upholding quality of dementia care, isolation and interpersonal barriers, and the psychological well-being of both residents and allied health professionals. Conclusion: In summary, this study has unveiled the challenges faced by allied health professionals in delivering dementia care amidst COVID-19 restrictions. The findings underscore the detrimental effects of limited social interactions on residents' psychological well-being, communication hurdles posed by PPE, and a perceived decline in the importance of allied health roles. Despite these challenges, participants offered valuable insights into strategies used to mitigate COVID-19's impact on dementia care, such as maintaining a positive outlook, utilising diverse communication methods, and implementing innovative care modification.
