Abstract: This dissertation investigates the socio-cultural impacts that are a result of volunteer tourism experiences in Eastern Africa, focusing on Maltese volunteer tourists. It provides a better understanding of Maltese volunteers’ motivations through an examination of the perceived benefits, self-actualisation and subsequent changes to their life when they complete the voluntourism experience To gain deep insights into the subject, the researcher uses a qualitative approach using semi-structured interview. This study highlights the increasing popularity of voluntourism, with many travellers now seeking self-realisation and a sense of altruism by volunteering, whilst also acknowledging the importance of prioritising the needs of host communities. It highlights the importance of aligning the efforts of voluntourists and organisations with the needs of the communities they serve. Findings suggest the evolving motivations behind voluntourism and stresses the necessity of personal growth through careful planning and collaboration on embarking on their volunteering experience.
