| Abstract: | This dissertation seeks to determine “How the growing powers of the EP from the 1979-2009 period marked a significant political and social change, strengthening or weakening the democratic legitimacy of the EU?”. The dissertation will focus on the importance of parliamentary institutions within the EU, how the institution strengthens a more democratic approach to decision-making and how the Parliament’s foundation in liberal democracy addresses the EU’s democratic deficit. The Amsterdam Treaty significantly modified the EU’s institutional architecture by enhancing the European parliament’s authority, particularly in legislative proceedings. At the same time, the Treaty of Nice sought to address EU institutional challenges in preparation for enlargement, although with less substantial parliamentary power. Despite opposition and hurdles, the parliament was willing to exercise its power and define EU policy. The Evolution of the EP represents a remarkable journey of resilience, adaption and progress, emerging as a vital pillar of democratic governance in the EU. While significant strides have been made in enhancing its power and legitimacy, challenges such as democratic deficits and institutional complexities persist. The evolution of the EP’s powers from 1979 to 2009 reflects the continuous quest for democratic legitimacy and effectiveness within the EU. Despite significant advances, challenges such as democratic deficit and low voter turnout persist, necessitating ongoing reforms and collaborative efforts to strengthen democratic governance and accountability. |
