Abstract: The importance of thorough appreciation of the last two decades of economic and financial history in the Central and Eastern European countries acceding to the EU, particularly as a basis for assessing how fast their financial services sectors could carry out changes which a wide open pan-EU market for financial services will impose, has been accepted by many contemporary researchers. In this study we consider some of these countries' main banking problems, and relate these to their macroeconomic policies and external sectors, The paper draws illustration from data compiled by IMF researchers Carl J. Lindgren, Gillian Garcia, and Matthew Saal.
