Abstract: The main objective of this dissertation is to describe and analyze political development which forms the bases for the democratization process and development of human rights over the most recent past, as a case study on Jordan. This is an issue of utmost importance to be studied nowadays, in a region which is witnessing a period of turmoil and transition with events in both Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine always in mind. Jordan, itself is considered, by many, World wide to be a model of change, particularly as far as liberalization, democratization and human rights in the Middle East region. Today's developments and changes have their basis in yesterdays actions and policies. Therefore, reviewing the historical setting sets the stage for understanding today's results, which are in turn the basis for tomorrows future development. The basic developments in democratization and human rights can best be checked through an analysis of the political system, both from a constitutional & legal aspects as well as political decision making process, and institutional framework, including the analysis of actual and potential role of civil society organizations. In this respect we answer the question of whether these organizations are the answer. There is a strong linkage and interplay between democratization and development, therefore we analyzed the economic reform program, along with the main economic issues of unemployment and poverty. Their impact on peoples participation need no stressing. Despite all the difficulties, it was apparent that Jordan witnessed positive change when measuring human development compared with other countries in the region as well as other countries world wide. Human development and liberty measures are good tools in this respect.
