The 130th anniversary of the death of John Henry Newman, coinciding with the current Covid-19 pandemic that is affecting the world, are two of the main reasons for a reflection on his journey in the Mediterranean in 1832-1833. The study of the crisis, the conversion and the call he received while seriously ill from a pandemic in Sicily in those years will be the objective of the research. To achieve this, the article will be divided into three parts. In the first part, some salient moments of his journey, with special mention of his solitary voyage to Sicily, will be presented. In the second part, various aspects of his conversion will be analysed. Initially, an analysis will be made on the crisis that he suffered, followed by a study on the conversion and his transforming call. Subsequently, a study of his poem that crystallizes his inner journey of conversion will be done, ending this part with an investigation on the mission in which he commits himself as a result of his call. The third and final part of the article will study how illness and isolation resulted in moments of transformation and illumination for the rest of his life. |
