Abstract: This thesis sets out to develop a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted risks faced by competitive bodybuilders, particularly focusing on those in Malta. It proposes a holistic risk management framework that integrates career sustainability, psychological health, and physical well-being. Using a qualitative methodology, the research employed semi-structured interviews with ten competitive bodybuilders to explore their experiences and perceptions deeply. The findings reveal that while physical risks are well-documented, the psychological and career-related risks are significant yet under-explored areas. For instance, economic uncertainties and the psychological burden of maintaining competitive physical form are recurrent themes that impact athletes' careers and well-being. These insights underline the need for a risk management framework that encompasses more than just physical health. The research concludes that a holistic approach to risk management is crucial for the well-being and career longevity of these athletes. By integrating strategies for psychological resilience and economic stability with traditional health risk management, athletes can have more robust support. The findings have important implications for stakeholders in the bodybuilding community, including athletes, coaches, and federations. By adopting the proposed framework, they can enhance the support provided to bodybuilders, aiding in their health and well-being long after their competitive careers end. This research contributes to the body of knowledge in sports risk management and calls for further studies to refine and expand the proposed framework.
