Abstract: In 1971, a group of dedicated men and women came together to take stock of the state of the field of historical studies and to chart possible future directions. Three years later the proceedings of Maltese History: What Future?, edited by Ann Williams and Roger Vella Bonavita, were published. In its pages are captured the excitement, the urgency, the priorities for ' History' in the country barely ten years after independence. It is telling that two of the six sessions of the meeting, and about half of the published volume, were dedicated to archives.
