Abstract: On the seventeenth day of the month of October 1635, a detailed document concerning the sixteenth-century fortifications of Valletta was presented to the French Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra Antoine de Paule (1623-1636). This report had been prepared in record time by the papal military engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani (1585-1638), who had on the first day of September of that year arrived in Malta accompanied by an 'assistente di pennello' called Francesco Buonamici ( 1596-1677).
