The representation of St. Paul in the Maltese history curriculum

Abstract

St. Paul, a significant figure in Maltese history, has left an indelible mark on the nation's cultural, religious, and historical narratives. This dissertation will seek to examine the representation of St. Paul in the Maltese history national curriculum, exploring the various instances when the figure appears in the syllabus. Through a comprehensive analysis of the historical period being represented, this study will shed light on how the cult of St. Paul has influenced not just the religious teachings, but also the historic narrative of the island (Grima, 2019; Azzopardi, 2006). The significance of St. Paul in Maltese history is not just limited to religious myths and teachings, which take the source of the bible (Acts: 27, 28), but it is also a subject of historical controversy (Fiorini & Vella, 2006; Freller, 1999; Buhagiar, 2007). This has a direct impact on the way the topic is taught in the classroom, leading to the need for further investigation into the representation of St. Paul in the national curriculum. The investigation will be based primarily on theoretical research, analysing the texts presented in the classroom to students. This study will be an important contribution to the understanding of the representation of St. Paul in the Maltese education system and the influence it has had on the nation's cultural and historical narratives. By delving deeper into this topic, this dissertation will provide a deeper understanding of the role that St. Paul has played in shaping the nation's identity, beliefs, and values.
