| Abstract: | Basic research pursues new knowledge, yet it takes significant effort to implement discoveries. Within the healthcare sector, standalone academic structures are often unequipped to turn new knowledge into practical solutions. This is particularly challenging. The university hospital model facilitates the effective and expeditious translation of new knowledge to improve healthcare and clinical practice. 'Translational research', originating in the medical and biosciences field, applies scientific evidence to improve healthcare and public health. It is the transfer of new understanding of biology and disease into new clinical methods, first testing in humans, clinical studies to influence clinical practice and decision making, and measuring outcomes of medical interventions.
