| Abstract: | This research study examined the effectiveness of life skills education within Maltese Secondary schools, with a particular focus on the role of Home Economics. The study aimed to assess how well the current Home Economics curriculum prepares students for the challenges of adulthood. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative focus groups with post-Secondary students who had recently completed their Secondary education. The findings revealed that while the Home Economics curriculum imparts valuable practical skills, it falls short in addressing the broader competencies needed in the 21st century. Students expressed concerns about the outdated nature of certain curriculum elements and the lack of focus on critical areas. Results also highlighted the importance of adopting a more student-centered approach, where the curriculum is more responsive to the needs and interests of students. Based on these findings, a number of recommendations are made for a thorough modernisation of the Home Economics curriculum, the integration of life skills education across various subjects, enhanced teacher training, and increased student involvement in curriculum development. The study also underscores the need for stronger collaboration between schools, communities, and policymakers to ensure that life skills education within Maltese Secondary schools is relevant and effective. Through such reform, the Maltese educational system can better equip young people for their smooth transition to adulthood. |
