Abstract: Malta has made significant progress in promoting rights and implementing legislation to address abusive relationships and gender-based violence (GBV). However, these issues continue to pose serious challenges. This study investigates the role of Personal, Social, and Career Development (PSCD) school lessons in addressing abusive relationships and GBV, with a particular focus on the perspectives and experiences of teachers. Using semi-structured interviews with eight secondary state school teachers of PSCD, the research explores their views, classroom practices, and the teaching strategies they employ when delivering lessons related to abusive relationships and GBV. Additionally, the study examines the challenges educators face. The six overlapping themes are: Teachers’ Perspectives, Classroom Approaches, Effective Teaching Methods and Resources, Teacher Training and Preparedness, Addressing Teaching Obstacles, and Assistance and Mentoring for Teachers. The findings indicate that local cultural attitudes heavily influence both the perception and teaching of these topics, requiring educators to approach their work with cultural sensitivity and informed understanding. The study identified a pressing need for improved teacher-training, support, and mentorship. It advocates for the development of a more adaptable and culturally responsive educational framework with an emphasis on fostering positive relationships between educators and learners. Based on these findings, the study recommends improving teacher training, strengthening in-school support services, integrating innovative teaching methods, and developing a curriculum that is adaptable to evolving cultural contexts, ensuring a comprehensive education on these critical topics.
