Abstract: Development can be taken to mean improving living conditions across the world. What “improving living conditions” means more precisely (Is it about economic growth? Poverty reduction? Decreasing inequality? Protecting the rights of the vulnerable? Protecting the living beyond the human species?), how it can be measured (through indicators such as gross national income, the Human Development Index, the Gini coefficient and so on) and how it occurs in practice are the subject of intense debate and controversy.
