Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how gynaecological cancer may alter long-term survivors' identities, as well as how they manage anxieties, worries, and physical side effects. This study also looks at survivorship programmes available and availed of in the post-treatment phase, from a medical sociology perspective. Nine women who were treated five years ago for gynaecological cancer in the local oncology centre were interviewed. Analysis of their narratives uncovered difficulties in the post-treatment phase, which were marked by enduring physical, sexual, and psychosocial impacts, through a sense of ‘biographical disruption’ and ‘liminality’. The post-treatment phase is complicated, as emotions may vary from fear, frustration, and resignation, to gratefulness, hope, and relief. The findings revealed how long term physical and psychological side effects can carry lasting consequences for one's sense of self and confidence, as well as relationships. Specifically, the joy of having overcome cancer may be tampered by fear of recurrence, disrupting the expected trajectory of a 'normal' life of most participants. However, on occasions, the post-treatment period may also be a time for favourable transformation, and of a better appreciation of life. This study carries significant implications for cancer care services, notably highlighting the need for cancer survivors’ support groups aimed at providing assistance to individuals who perceive cancer as a threat to their identity.
