Abstract: Oral tradition, supported by literary evidence, attests that the building of the old Capuchin church and friary in Floriana were designed by the Maltese engineer Girolamo Cassar (c.1520-1592). In this study we intend to present some of the earliest literary evidence regarding the relationship of this Maltese architect to this old Capuchin complex in Floriana. We will evaluate the relevance and reliability of a number of writings in this matter.
