Abstract: Paracetamol is an effective analgesic-antipyretic that can be administered safely to children and adults at the appropriate therapeutic doses. The drug is readily metabolised by the liver and toxic metabolites are removed by conjugation with endogenous glutathione. Accidental or deliberate overdosage can lead to hepatic toxicity that can be fatal if not treated urgently with antidotes that replenish depleted glutathione. Pharmacists have an important role to play in patient education to help reduce the incidence of paracetamol poisoning.
