Abstract: The two televised adaptations of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel North and South which aired on BBC in 1975 and in 2004 exemplify the striking mutations in the aesthetic landscape of television drama brought about by the extraordinary impact of a number of technological and production innovations. After having discussed some of the most significant strategies deployed in the 1975 adaptation, I will be concentrating primarily on the 2004 series which continues to receive glowing reviews from critics and viewers alike and is still largely considered as one of the BBCs most popular televised period dramas.
