Abstract: This is a paper read at the 1st International Symposium on Dental Hygiene Education held in Rome 3 to 5th May 1968. Reference is made to several surveys aimed to study the oral condition of the Maltese population. Comparisons with similar studies effected overseas are outlined and percentages focused on children`s results are described. Several outcomes indicate that the state of affairs in Maltese children is mainly due to lack of dental health education. Additionally, a more correct assessment of the oral health of the Maltese population will be made when further surveys are carried out on a larger number of persons of a wider socio-economic status. Of utmost importance is the prevention of disease, which is the prerogative of the public health administration, whereby it is also suggested that oral hygiene education should start as early as possible.
