| Abstract: | This article discusses a seventeenth-century painting of the Crucifixion at St Paul’s Basilica in Rabat, Malta. It looks at its history and also presents a conservation initiative undertaken in 2024. This joint research and conservation initiative was essential for preserving the artistic integrity of the painting, while revealing the historical connections that provide a context to this artwork. The painting is a significant artistic treasure and also forms part of the legacy of Cosmana Navarra, one of the most important female patrons of architecture and the arts in seventeenth-century Malta. |
