Abstract: The figure of the Mother of God represented an almost universal symbol of faith, especially following the Council of Trent.1 The Marian devotion was strengthened by literature, shrines, sermons and new prayers. It acquired the status of the Shield of the Catholic World, especially in the face of the expansion of lslam and following the victory of the Catholic League against the Ottomans at the Battle of Lepanto.
