| Abstract: | Sofia has been described as a dynamic spirit catching up with contemporary European cities. Taking a phenomenological approach, this paper identifies the unique factors which distinguish it from other national capital cities. Orientation is important but equally significant is its recognition as the capital of the Republic of Bulgaria and as a symbol of the Bulgarian nation. Applying Norberg-Schulz’s terminology, such appreciation is possible through identifying tangible and intangible phenomena that define the place, as well as the space occupied by contemporary Sofia. This thesis should not be read as a plea for nationalism but as an attempt to develop a philosophy of urban planning which is grounded in the memory of Bulgaria and Bulgarian identity. |
