Abstract: This paper explores the iconography of the ‘Maria Lactans’ panel at St Peter’s monastery in Mdina. This painting was venerated over the centuries reflecting its significance to the cloistered nuns, however its iconography depicting the Nursing Madonna, St Raphael and St Paul the Hermit, is unusual for the church of a Maltese female Benedictine community, where it was first recorded in 1555. Its provenance is not known and the combination of its three subjects points not only to this Benedictine monastery but also to the Augustinian friars of Rabat, with possible echoes of the late medieval hospital that functioned on the site in Mdina before the monastery was established in 1455.
