| Abstract: | As part of the Bachelor of Arts in Tourism offered
by the Department of Tourism Management at the
University of Malta, students following the studyunit
“Island Tourism” participated in a day-long
field trip to the locality of Xewkija in Gozo on
May 10th 2025. This investigation served as an
opportunity for students to explore how a locality
in Gozo contributes to the island's tourism product
its distinctiveness, how challenges like seasonality
and connectivity affect tourism, and what impact
island tourism has on the local community. Xewkija is considered one of the oldest settlements in Gozo with a population of about 3,555 (NSO, 2023). It has a helipad, which previously offered a connection between the two main islands of the archipelago. Plans are currently underway to convert this into an airstrip for small aircraft to enhance the island’s connectivity (GRDA, 2022). |
