Abstract: This paper documents the presence of Arabic in the Maltese islands, starting from a consideration of the Maltese language itself which is an offshoot of Arabic but which throughout many centuries has been both isolated from the mother-tongue and exposed lo the massive influence of non-Arabic languages in a Christian environment. As a consequence, Arabic is considered a foreign language in Malta, but there is an ancient tradition of the teaching Arabic for a variety of reasons. The study also dwells on a number of ancillary issues, such as the contemporary community of Arab nationals and the role of Arabic in the codification of Maltese.
