| Abstract: | This journey initially began with interest in exploring personal roots. Longing to learn more about where one comes from, the traits inherited from family members, and the influences of upbringing. One’s enduring fascinations has always been the objects people leave behind and what living relatives choose to keep as mementos. These objects, in view, serve as a form of physical memory. Much like photographs capture moments in time, ordinary objects are given meaning, becoming relics that tell a story. These items have the power not only to remind of a memory but to embody it. Similarly, photos, much like objects, capture a moment frozen in time, allowing us to revisit those memories and feel a sense of nostalgia. As time passes, we often romanticize these moments. My family has always held on to objects that might seem like clutter to others because they either belonged to loved ones or hold special memories. These little things bring us closer to the loved ones who shaped us and made us who we are. Looking through family archives made this entire research very personal as it was like looking into my own past even though I was not there to live it. Throughout this project the aim has been to broaden personal interest with themes of memory, heritage, and identity, while also framing the exploration around the media that was chosen to represent these and how they will reflect what I want to convey. The research question being – ‘How do mementos serve as vessels for familial memories, and what role do they play in shaping personal and collective identity across generations?’ has served as a point of reference when making sure I am not going out of point. Since I never had the opportunity to meet the people who came before me, this project aided in learning more about these individuals whose existence has directly shaped my own. In many ways, this research serves not only as a means to understand their histories but also as a journey toward learning more about myself. |
