| Abstract: | The residential settlements in the Maltese islands represent the essence of historical occurrences, incorporating centuries of political and socio-economic developments which characterise the cultural narrative of the Maltese community. Growing up in Lija nurtured in me a deep appreciation for the village’s unique historical trajectory, which inspired me to pursue it as part of my studies. This research aims to compile an in-depth understanding of Lija’s evolution within the broader context of Maltese history, through a comprehensive study of local history since 1800. The methodology adopted throughout this extensive research integrates both qualitative and quantitative techniques in the collection and analysis of date. The most significant documentation throughout this research mainly incorporates primary sources of historical data. This documentation involves the Malta Blue Books, Malta Government Censuses, the Government Gazette, Department Reports, Annual Abstract of Statistics, Electoral Registers, General Election Reports, local and national newspapers, along with the use of imagery that will contribute to the historical analysis. Although the primary sources establish the main foundations for research, secondary sources also provide valuable contexts and insights which further aid in the historical interpretation of the village. After providing a concise historical overview of the village, this study proceeds to concentrate on six characteristic developments, which together form a distinct portrait of the village and its residents throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The second chapter addresses the transformations in demographic patterns of Lija within that of the broader Maltese islands. The subsequent three chapters will explore the evolution of Lija through its social fabric, evaluating occupational patterns, living standards, and educational patterns. The sixth chapter evaluates the political inclinations of Lija’s villagers, primarily focusing on the General and Local Council elections, which provide a more comprehensive representation of political allegiance. Ultimately, chapter seven characterises the socioreligious and cultural aspects in Lija, which unifies its residents till the present day. |
