Abstract: The decision to delve into the extent of Malta-Japan relations stems from a personal affinity towards Japan. At the same time, I wanted to be able to express by gratitude to Malta for having hosted me for these past three years. Therefore, by combining the two in this dissertation I feel I am leaving most adequate homage. The first chapter aims to provide a background to Anglo – Japanese interactions. Given that the alliance that will develop between the two will set Malta and Japan on a collision course. The chapter mainly acts as context with emphasis on the reasons and event that led to the formalisation of the Anglo – Japanese alliance. The second chapter frames Malta within the broader British Empire, as an important and strategic naval base. The island experienced fluctuations in relevance often coinciding with conflict in the region, highlighting heavy economic reliance on Britain. The third chapter should be considered as the centre of the dissertation given that it delves into the minutiae of relations between Malta and Japan. Specifically, the period dealt with is that of the Great War, when Japan deployed its navy to aid in convoy escort in the Mediterrenean. It is also in this chapter that the human character of History shines, thanks to the multiple figures taken into consideration. The fourth chapter deals with the second half of the twentieth century. After the Second World War, Malta embarked on a process of independence and Japan featured prominently in its aid. Therefore, the interaction between the two countries is herein framed in virtue of trade.
