| Abstract: | The Great Siege of 1565 was a statement of the resilience of the people of Malta. The victories over the French in 1800 and the Italians in 1943 were included later in the commemoration of Victory Day held annually on 8 September. The memorial in remembrance of this siege includes three allegorical figures – the central represents courage whilst the others symbolise Catholic faith and civilisation, respectively. It is positioned between St John’s Cathedral and the Law Courts, the palace of faith and the palace of justice, respectively. What is its relevance of Victory Day to contemporary Malta? |
