Abstract: The irony of historiography lies in its very essence and being. It attempts to provide a story of humanity, a story of the living by uncovering, discovering, and interpreting objects. All that remains of people’s lives and the events they were part of are the objects: tools, kitchenware, decorative artefacts, books, letters, bones. All that remains as testament to the human are objects. Human legacy and life are laid bare and sedimented in the objects that remain as witnesses to the life stories that they were part of.
