20 Years in the EU Exhibition in Schools

Abstract

To mark the 20th anniversary of Malta's membership of the European Union in May 2024, the Institute for European Studies created an exhibition that commemorates this important date in Malta's post-independence history.

Comprising ten panels, the exhibition begins by detailing the EU's enlargement policy. It then transitions to Malta's pre-membership journey, covering key milestones such as the signing of the 1970 Association Agreement, the submission of Malta's application to join in 1990, and its eventual membership in 2004. The exhibition concludes by outlining Malta's experience as an EU Member State.

During the academic year 2023-24, the exhibition was on display at the University of Malta, Valletta Campus and the Main Library.

During 2024-25, the exhibition was on display in various schools across Malta and Gozo with the intent of promoting the studying of European Studies in secondary schools. To aid in this outreach campaign, the Institute’s academics organised a series of talks in these schools to promote European Studies but also, to explain the role of Malta in the European Union. In some occasions, these talks were supported by the European Parliament Office in Malta who organised an EU simulation game for students.
