Abstract: Midwifery mentorship aims at enhancing clinical skills, competence and knowledge amongst student midwives all over the globe. Student midwives in Malta, like their counterparts elsewhere, often face the challenge of translating theoretical knowledge into practical application. Mentors, typically experienced midwives, provide invaluable guidance to these students during clinical placements. They offer hands-on training, demonstrate best practices, and help the students navigate complex clinical scenarios. Similarly, the purpose of preceptorship is to enhance newly registered midwives’ confidence in their ability to practise autonomously. This direct, on-the-job training helps novice midwives deepen their critical thinking abilities and improve their ability to practice reflectively, skills necessary for providing high-quality care. In Malta, the mentoring and preceptorship programmes aim to ensure that midwives entering the workforce are equipped to meet professional standards and provide safe, competent and compassionate support to families in their care. This chapter explores the historical context, current practices, challenges, and future directions of midwifery mentoring and preceptorship in Malta, highlighting their significance in improving midwifery education and training.
