Abstract: Professor Sater presented his research on LGBTIQ Movements in the Arab World. This paper explores the state of LGBTIQ rights in the Arab world, with a particular focus on Tunisia. It examines the legal, social, and political challenges faced by LGBTIQ individuals, highlighting how colonial legacies, religious norms, and authoritarian governance shape discrimination and repression. Tunisia is analysed as a complex case, where relative political openness coexists with persistent legal and societal hostility. The paper draws on regional comparisons to contextualise Tunisia’s position, while assessing the prospects for reform and advocacy within broader struggles for human rights and democratic accountability in the Arab region.
