| Abstract: | This report explores the experiences of Maltese female farmers and their vital, yet often underrecognized, contributions to the agricultural sector. Although women represent only 11.1% of registered farm holders, they play a significant role through unpaid and informal labour, particularly within family-run farms. Drawing on surveys, interviews, and field observations, the study examines the gender-specific challenges these women face, including societal stereotypes, limited institutional support, and the ongoing pressure of balancing agricultural work with domestic responsibilities. Despite these obstacles, many women demonstrate remarkable resilience while embracing sustainable practices, launching small-scale entrepreneurial ventures, and forming peer support networks. Initiatives such as EWA Malta provide valuable mentorship and community-building, yet a broader cultural shift remains necessary to achieve systemic change. Male perspectives included in the study highlight both the persistence of traditional gender roles and an increasing appreciation for women’s essential contributions, from marketing to financial management. While men often handle the more visible business aspects, they recognise the indispensable, collaborative role women play in farming households. The report concludes that elevating women’s voices, addressing structural barriers, and promoting inclusive dialogue are critical steps toward a more equitable and sustainable future for Maltese agriculture. |
