Abstract: The transition to motherhood is a crucial period for all mothers; it is a complex time, as women’s experiences are marked by both challenges and new beginnings. These experiences are even more pronounced in first time motherhood which is the gap this study aims to answer. This proposed study is aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of first-time mothers through their early motherhood journey. The objectives of this study are to explore the identity shifts experienced by first-time mothers during their journey through motherhood. Additionally to identify the key challenges faced by first time mothers and coping strategies they employ in adapting to their new role. Finally, to identify the role of social support systems in this process. A qualitative research approach will be implemented. The sample will consist of eight participants who fit the eligibility criteria, chosen via purposive sampling. The eligibility criteria being Maltese primiparous women who are over 18 years of age and with children from 1 to 2 years of age. Using online advertisements posted on the social media accounts of local organisations Malta Midwives Association and My Mama. Data will be collected via semi-structured audio-recorded interviews with the findings analysed through thematic analysis using the six-step process developed by Braun and Clark (2006). A pilot study will also be done to evaluate and amend if needed before the main study is conducted. Trustworthiness will be achieved by ensuring credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. This study will strictly adhere to the ethical principles outlined in the Belmont report and ethical clearance will be sought prior to collecting data. It is anticipated that this study will highlight women’s identity shifts during their early motherhood experience and the needs of first-time mothers following the first year of motherhood. To the author’s knowledge, this research is the first of its type in Malta, and it will allow healthcare professionals, particularly midwives, to have a deeper understanding of the experience of first-time motherhood. This could help to change the way midwives shape their care ensuring individualised and holistic care.
