| Abstract: | Women undergo significant physical and emotional changes throughout the perinatal period. Regular exercise during the perinatal period has been associated with reduced pregnancy complications, improved cardiovascular health and elevated maternal moods. This proposed study aims to elicit and understand women’s exercise experiences during the perinatal period. The research objectives are threefold: to explore women’s engagement with exercise during the perinatal period, to comprehend women’s perceived benefits of exercise during the perinatal period and to understand the challenges associated with exercise during the perinatal period. This study will adopt a qualitative methodology, with data being generated using a semi-structured interview schedule specifically designed for this study in both English and Maltese. It is anticipated that 8 to 10 conveniently selected postpartum women will be recruited via social media advertisements. The data will be analysed using thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke. Ethical issues will be respected throughout this study. It is hoped that the findings of this study will provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals and policymakers seeking to promote healthier, more active lifestyles for women during this crucial period. |
