| Abstract: | Pilates is becoming an increasingly popular form of exercise worldwide, with claims of both physical and psychological benefits. This study aims to explore the experiences and perceptions of women practising Pilates during pregnancy. It will explore women’s perceptions of the physical and psychological effects of practising Pilates during pregnancy and identify barriers and facilitators of participating in Pilates during pregnancy. To reach this aim, a qualitative research approach will be used. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews will be conducted with eight women in their final four weeks of pregnancy, who will have actively participated in Pilates classes throughout their pregnancy. This timing will allow for an in- depth exploration of their experiences and the perceived impact of Pilates on their wellbeing. Participants will be recruited using purposive sampling. The interviews will be audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using thematic analysis to explore key themes emerging from participants' experiences. The findings from this study are expected to offer valuable insights into the potential benefits of Pilates for expectant mothers and may support the promotion of Pilates as an effective antenatal exercise. By highlighting both physical and psychological impacts, the research aims to raise awareness among women and healthcare professionals about the effects of Pilates during pregnancy. It is expected to contribute to evidence-based research regarding Pilates and pregnancy, inform policy recommendations, and support the development of clearer guidelines for prenatal exercise. Ultimately, this study may encourage greater adoption of Pilates within prenatal care programmes and contribute to enhancing maternal health during pregnancy. |
