| Abstract: | The experiences of fathers following fertility treatment remain an underexplored aspect of reproductive health, often overshadowed by the focus on maternal perspectives. This study aims to explore the experiences of fathers following fertility treatment due to male-factor infertility (MFI). The study’s objectives are to explore fathers’ emotional responses to the fertility treatment process, identify the difficulties they face, and assess the coping strategies they employ. Additionally, it proposes recommendations for improving local support systems for men undergoing fertility treatment. The study will adopt a qualitative research approach, through semi-structured interviews that will be audio-recorded, in accordance with ethical guidelines. A purposive sampling technique will be utilised to recruit a sample of eight eligible male participants who have successfully undergone fertility treatment and are now fathers. Participants will have undergone one or more fertility-related procedures, such as genetic testing, urological assessments, or testicular ultrasonography, and/ or involvement in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) pursued by their female partners, including in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), or intrauterine insemination (IUI). Participants will be recruited from Obstetric Wards 1 and 3 at the local general hospital. To ensure the study’s feasibility, a pilot study will be conducted before data collection. Thematic analysis will be used to identify key themes encapsulating the fathers’ experiences. The study is expected to contribute valuable insights on the fathers' experiences following fertility treatment, an aspect of reproductive health that is under researched. By highlighting the unique challenges faced by fathers, it aims to inform future policies, and improve support services for men while undergoing fertility treatment. This research may also serve as a foundation for further studies exploring males’ well-being during treatment, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and holistic approach to fertility care. |
