Abstract: The canonical legislation of the Catholic Church specifies that “only a baptised man can validly receive sacred ordination.” This canon presents two requirements for the valid reception of orders: the candidate must have been baptised (see can. 842 § 1), and must be of the male sex. However, despite being rooted in the most consistent and continuous disciplinary tradition of the Church, in recent decades, the second provision of this canon has been widely and frequently discussed, and the question of the ordination of women has been repeatedly raised.
