| Abstract: | The limitations and difficulties of using bio-based materials, such as mycelium and flax fibre, in architecture are examined in the dissertation. The transition to sustainable materials is crucial as climate change and global warming worsen, problems that are heavily impacted by the building sector. However, their adoption is hampered by issues like poor mechanical qualities, higher costs, and uncertain durability, which are made worse by the difficulties of mass production. The performance, efficacy, life cycle assessment (LCA), and procurement of bio-based materials are the main topics of the study's review of recent literature on these contemporary issues. By providing insightful information for upcoming studies and innovations in the field, the objective is to advance and improve contemporary sustainable construction in the local context (Malta). To investigate the potential adaptation and suitability of mycelium and flax fibre in the modern context of Malta, the dissertation also includes interviews with experts in the field. The findings show that mycelium is best suited for interior, non-load-bearing applications due to its moisture sensitivity, while flax fibre holds structural promise but requires advancements in resin technology and local fabrication capacity. The conclusion emphasises the necessity of strategic investment in research infrastructure, policy, and pilot projects to facilitate the potential integration of these materials into Malta’s architectural landscape. |
