Abstract: The account of Paul’s shipwreck and of his three-month stay in Malta, situated within the We-sections of the Acts of the Apostles, serves a narrative role that captivates the reader from the outset. The We-sections are those pericopes in which Luke, as author penning the accounts, also appears as a participant in the events he describes. The shipwreck account is exceptionally detailed, comparable in its narrative density to the account of the Passion of Jesus (Lk 22–23) itself, or to the pericope concerning Peter and Cornelius in the Acts of the Apostles (10–11), the seminal moment, sanctioned by Peter himself, in which the Jewish-Christian Church is opened to Gentile believers.
