Abstract: The most important political event in 2004 was Malta's accession to the European Union on 1 May. In March, the Prime Minister and leader of the Nationalist Party (NP [1]), Eddie Fenech Adami, resigned from office and subsequently became the President of Malta. Lawrence Gonzi was elected as the new NP leader and the new Prime Minister of Malta. When he took office, Mr Gonzi reduced the number of ministers and took responsibility for the Ministry of Finance. In July, the Minister of Foreign Affairs resigned after accusations of unethical conduct.
