| Abstract: | The English language school sector in Malta has grown into a key pillar of the country’s educational tourism industry. With its unique position as an English-speaking destination in the Mediterranean, Malta has become an increasingly popular choice for international students seeking to improve their English language skills in an immersive environment. This research set out to explore the evolution of this sector and to understand the motivations and experiences of the students who choose Malta as their study destination. It focuses on how language schools balance their dual role as both educational providers and tourism facilitators. The research was carried out through a combination of primary and secondary data collection. Two questionnaires were distributed to current and former students, while interviews were conducted with staff from different English language schools. The findings reveal that while the teaching quality and integration of digital tools are generally praised, several challenges remain. These include issues with student placement, accommodation standards, seasonal staffing, and the depth of cultural immersion offered through leisure activities. The study concludes that although Malta performs well in terms of language instruction and remains attractive to international students, its long-term success will depend on improving structural areas that extend beyond the classroom. There is a clear need to better support teaching staff, strengthen accommodation monitoring, and offer deeper cultural engagement. As the industry continues to grow, these improvements are necessary to ensure that Malta retains its competitive edge and continues to deliver a high-quality language learning experience. |
