| Abstract: | Sustainable technology integration has grown in importance as agritourism continues to change in response to rising environmental consciousness and changing traveller tastes. This dissertation explores aquaponics, a cutting-edge agricultural technique that combines hydroponics with aquaculture, as a practical and sustainable substitute for conventional agritourism activities. The study contrasts opinions of a contemporary aquaponics with those of traditional agritourism using a qualitative research methodology that includes a focus group of six Maltese individuals. The results show that aquaponics is viewed as a forward-thinking, educational, and environmentally responsible experience, but traditional agritourism is prized for its authenticity, emotional resonance, and cultural heritage. Participants promoted a hybrid strategy that combines innovation and tradition, highlighting the complimentary possibilities of both models. The study comes to the conclusion that aquaponics, especially in urban or space-constrained areas like Malta, might improve agritourism by providing a platform for sustainability teaching and technical involvement. Creating integrated agritourism models, enhancing educational initiatives, and promoting sustainable practices via cross-sector cooperation are some of the recommendations. By introducing aquaponics as a revolutionary concept that supports sustainable tourism, education, and rural development, this study adds to the body of knowledge on agritourism. |
