The collection of data and airport security within the travel and tourism industry

Abstract

This research aims to explore the methods used when collecting passenger data, how such data is stored, as well as airport security measures which are in place. The travel and tourism industry faces multiple risks, with breaches of data privacy and security being the most pertinent. This is especially the case where airports are concerned. However, although data surveillance and airport security are two key elements within the industry, unfortunately, not many give importance to, and it is believed that more emphasis and increase in awareness should be made for such an issue of concern. To achieve this research study’s aims and objectives, this research records a total of four interviews (one interview was conducted with two participants) with personnel holding a high position within their respective entities. Making use of open-ended questions throughout this study has helped the participants not only to give information, which is relevant to the proposed questions, but it has also helped them to give their opinion on the subject matter as they deemed necessary. All data obtained throughout this research was analysed by following the thematic analysis approach, which outlined the following themes; data collection, airport security, cybercrime and data protection. This research is considered as important to the tourism industry as it enhances knowledge related to passengers’ data collection as well as airport security. In addition, this research can also raise more awareness on the importance of data protection regulations and airport security following well-known activities that have changed the aviation sector in particular.
