| Abstract: | This two-part publication celebrates the identity of the Mediterranean island of Gozo through an engagement with art-historical dialogue and contemporary art practice. It documents the artistic and cultural event Identity of an Island – Gozo: Art between past and present which took place at Teatru Astra in Victoria during the month of May 2022, under the artistic direction of Dr Mark Sagona, Head of the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Malta. This volume publishes the eight papers on different aspects of art in Gozo which were delivered by Frederica Agius, Christian Attard, Charles Cassar, Nikki Petroni, Mark Sagona, Nicoline Sagona, Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci and Conrad Thake, during the conference, and documents the projects of contemporary art which were installed throughout the spaces of Teatru Astra and its newly-refurbished foyer. The book also celebrates the pioneering figure of Maltese modern artist Frank Portelli (1922-2004) on the first centenary since his birth. |
